Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a complete failure however, they bounce back with their fourth album Isolation that features two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make Toto a household name across the world.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are put in financial difficulty. They decide to record a new album and change their name with an alternative producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
